Rice, another name, Oryza Sativa L., used for human consumption, directly or after reconditioning. 

1.0 The Scope
This standard applies to husked rice, milled rice, and parboiled rice, all for direct human consumption i.e ready for its intended use as human food, presented in a packaged form or sold loose from the packaged directly to the consumer. It does not apply to other products derived from rice or glutinous rice.

  • Rice is whole and broken kernels obtained from the species Oryza sativa L.
  • Paddy rice is rice which has retained its husk after threshing.
  • Husked rice (brown rice or cargo rice) is paddy rice from which the husk only has been removed. The process of husking and handling may result in some loss of bran.
  • Milled rice (white rice) is husked rice from which all or part of the bran and germ have been removed by milling.
  • Parboiled rice may be husked or milled rice processed from paddy or husked rice that has been soaked in water and subjected to a heat treatment so that the starch is fully gelatinized, followed by a drying process.
  • Glutinous rice; waxy rice: Kernels of special varieties of rice which have a white and opaque appearance. The starch of glutinous rice consists almost entirely of amylopectin. It has a tendency to stick together after cooking.
3.0 Quality Factor
Rice shall be safe and suitable for human consumption, rice shall be free from abnormal flavors, odors, living insects, and mites.
Moisture content 15% m/m max
Lower moisture content limits should be required for certain destinations in relation to the climate, duration of transport and storage. Governments accepting the standard are requested to indicate and justify the requirements in force in their country.
Extraneous matter:
Is defined as organic and inorganic components other than kernels or rice.
Impurities of animal origin (including dead insects) 0.1% m/m max.
Heavy metals:
The product covered by the provisions of this standard shall be free from heavy metals in amounts which may represent a hazard to human health.
Pesticides recidues:
Rice shall be free of pesticide residues.
Other requirement:
Refer to Organic Certification standard USDA - NOP, EU and Buyer requirement.

4.0 Packing
Rice shall be packed in food grade packaging, clean and dry pack, 1 kg, 2 kg, 5 kg, 10 kg, and 20 kd / pack.

5.0 Marking
Following particular shall be marked and labelling clearly on the packaging:
  1. Name of the product & grade
  2. Variety of trade name
  3. Lot no. - Batch no.
  4. Nett weight - gross weight
  5. Date of packaging
  6. Country of origin
  7. name the address of producer
  8. best before
  9. Special requirement / treatment. Ex: No. fumigation allow, special handling, etc.

6.0 Product Sample
Product sample shall packed & store. Shall it be used as reference.
  • Sample requirement: 2 bags of each product. Content: 1 kg / bag
  • Production identification: product anme, plate of production, lot number, remarks.
  • Sample shall be vacuum packed, keep in organized storage easy to find and maintain in good conditions.
